Proposed 20% Rule Bill has Hearing in the Senate
The Senate Public Health and Welfare committee met today to hear testimony on HB 2611, which would amend the statute requiring owner dentists to spend 50 percent of their time in satellite practices to 20 percent. The Kansas Dental Association and three private practice dentists testified. Oral Health Kansas submitted written testimony in favor of the bill. OHK supports this change because it will encourage dentists to open offices in rural areas. The patient population in small communities may not be large enough to support 50 percent of a dentist's time, but could likely support 20 percent. Furthermore, these satellite offices are great training grounds for young dentists, looking for a professional mentor and to build a patient base without the capital outlay their own practice requires. No word on if the committee plans to work the bill yet.
